Hi Julie,

Thanks for following up on this information and we have not received confirmation from the station.

Also they have mentioned that only 1 incident took place and my guess is that it did not happen in that particular corner. Will let you know once I get confirmation.

Kind regards

The alarming thing is that the only way to gain access to that area of our property is through the neighbouring houses. To do it without setting off an alarm raises another concern, that they are watching more closely than we think.

There are builders in the area again and with their elevation on roofs and on scaffolding they have a bird's eye view of the street and the comings and goings of residents.

PLEASE BE AWARE AND REPORT ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS.

That is the same modus operandi of two older women who prey on younger women waiting for taxis outside our corner property. They ask if the woman would like to help pack for Aids orphans in our house and say that for security purposes they must check the handbag and cell. They say they are going in the gate around the corner (it's a pedestrian gate) and get the woman to wait at our intercom to get the signal to come in. Then they get into a car waiting around the corner and speed off. This leaves the victim penniless, phoneless and somewhat distraught. It drives me mad!

We are on the corner of Mineraal and Christo. Saffier is at the end of Mineraal so they are obviously working the area again. It has happened many times.

01 February 2012

Release: immediate

Note to editors: The following statement was distributed at a press conference held today by Lindiwe Mazibuko MP, Parliamentary Leader of the Democratic Alliance.

I am proud today to announce the appointment of a Shadow Cabinet which I believe will help restore Parliament to its rightful place at the centre of our democracy. This is an entirely new Shadow Cabinet designed to help the Democratic Alliance (DA) achieve its objectives in Parliament.

We believe that Parliament should be a forum for robust policy debate in which participants are at the cutting edge of developments in their portfolios.

We also believe that Parliament should be feared by government ministers who abuse their power. It must be a place where the executive is held to account, not a chamber characterised by “obsequious conformity”, as Archbishop Tutu once observed.

Lastly, it is important to us that every South African feels that they have a stake in Parliament. After all, it is the people’s Parliament. It must never feel like an elitist institution, out of touch with the real world.

With these considerations in mind, I have appointed a new Shadow Cabinet which I believe will become a force for change, not just in Parliament, but in South Africa as a whole.

Putting together this Shadow Cabinet was the result of a far-reaching and thorough process of consultation. Nevertheless, decisions like this are never easy. They are particularly difficult when you are blessed with the wealth of talent, expertise and experience that we have in the Democratic Alliance.

The starting point was to ensure that the new Shadow Cabinet was suitably diverse. This is important because the positions we take in Parliament need to be informed by a wide range of perspectives.

I also wanted to ensure that there was an appropriate “generational mix”. If there is one thing I have learned it is that the experience of veterans, mixed with the energy of youth, makes a formidable combination.

Most importantly, I wanted to ensure that each and every member of the Shadow Cabinet is fit for purpose. Some Shadow Ministers are experts in policy and legislation; others have first-rate communication abilities; many are brilliant activists and community organisers. So I have tried, as far as possible, to give each Shadow Minister the best platform upon which to showcase their particular talents.

As this is a Shadow Cabinet in the true sense of the term, it neatly mirrors the existing Cabinet Clusters.

Our Shadow Economics Cluster will work to ensure that policies and legislation enacted by Parliament are a help and not a hindrance to economic growth and job creation. It will be their responsibility to speak on behalf of the millions of South Africans who lack access to work opportunities, and to advance the DA's vision for a growing and prosperous South Africa. We will push our policy objective of achieving 8% growth at every opportunity.

The Shadow Ministers in the Economics Cluster are:

Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries – Annette Steyn
Appropriations – Marius Swart
Communications – Marian Shinn
Economic Development – Haniff Hoosen
The Shadow Governance Cluster comprises a team of men and women who are passionate about ensuring that the machinery of government is clean and that it works to improve the lives of our people. Our governance Shadow Ministers will work hard to promote effective service delivery, and expose corruption wherever it manifests, because corruption is the enemy of growth and prosperity.

The Shadow Ministers in the Governance Cluster are:

Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs – John Steenhuisen
Public Service & Administration – Kobus Marais
Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) – Dr Dion George
Women, Children & People with Disabilities – Helen Lamoela

The role of the Shadow Peace and Security Cluster is to advance policies and legislation to help build a criminal justice system in which all are equal before the law; criminals fear being caught, prosecuted and punished; and South Africans feel safe in their homes and on our streets. Our Peace and Security Shadow Minster must also oversee the independent institutions of the state, to ensure that they protect the citizens of South Africa, and not the governing party.

The Shadow Ministers in the Peace & Security Cluster are:

Correctional Services – James Selfe

The Shadow Social Services Cluster will push for policies and legislation that will lift people out of poverty instead of keeping them trapped in it. It comprises individuals who care deeply about maximising the potential inherent in every citizen of our country. They will work to improve the education, healthcare and living conditions of the poorest and most marginalised of our citizens.

The Shadow Ministers in the Social Services Cluster are:

Lastly, the Shadow Minister responsible for both the Presidency: Performance Monitoring & Evaluation, and the Presidency: National Planning Commission will be Joe McGluwa.

I said earlier that one of our objectives is to ensure that South Africans feel they are truly represented in Parliament; that it is a forum where community issues can be addressed by national decision-makers.

The DA has always believed in a proportional electoral system that includes a form of direct constituency representation. We may not be able to change the electoral system right now, but over the coming weeks, we plan to introduce a form of constituency representation that will strengthen the link between MPs and their constituents.

Finally, this Shadow Cabinet gives effect to the Memorandum of Understanding between the Independent Democrats (ID) and the Democratic Alliance, which was promulgated in August 2010. Our two parties have not merged but we are already one caucus, and our efforts to win more voters in 2014 will benefit from having the skills and expertise of our ID colleagues in the Shadow Cabinet.
A high-gain directional antenna designed to manage the power in the wanted direction and reduce it in unwanted directions. In order to use a Yagi antenna, you must know where the nearest tower is. If a Yagi is not aimed properly, it will lose its effectiveness. If there are multiple towers serving you or you are unsure of your tower’s location, an omni-directional antenna is a better solution.
There are different ways to volunteer - i.e. become a reservist and assist, or ask at the station if you can assist as a civilian.

You cannot become a reservist at the moment, as the new National Instruction (NI) for reservists has not been passed. The NI dictates entry requirements to become a reservist, training standards, powers and authority, disciplinary procedures, rank, promotions etc.

Until that is passed you won't be recruited as the entry criteria are not confirmed. More than likely you will have to meet the following criteria to join reservists as an unpaid volunteer: matric, employed, no criminal record, pass psychometric testing. Then you will be allowed to join the training, and if all aspects of training is passed, then you become a reservist.

Hope that helps...

Hi Jenny,

I hope you're well and thanks for keeping us so informed.

Anyway, yesterday I had a suspicious looking Silver VW Touran driving down Valley/Charlie here in Fontainebleau and very slowly , stopping and then moving again and stopping. Seems they were taking Photo's of the gates. This is not the first time we have seen this during the past year.

registration number WSV864GP with darkened windows.

I did not report this as they became aware of me at my gate and sped off after u-turning in Maria road and going back past me and turned off down Cherry towards Republic.

Just by the way, we were burgled again on Christmas eve at out house in our absence.

Please send out some info, it might help.

best regards,

Lookouts:

1) Black Subaru, SGC 142 GP - This vehicle hit the Bryanston Parallel Medium Primary school this morning and has been targeting other schools in the Bryanston area. Using remote control blocking system they steal goods from vehicles when parents are taking their children to classrooms. There was a shoot-out this morning at the school. (STILL AT LARGE)

2) Silver Chev Sedan (unknown model), BL 55 WT GP – Armed robbery, 2 x BM’s armed with a revolver and a pistol, followed victim from Broadacres shopping center where he had drawn a large sum of cash for his business and robbed him in his driveway. (STILL AT LARGE)

NEW

3) Silver Nissan Murano, VKT 642 GP – Robbery, 3 BM’s and 1 WM? involved.

4) White Toyota Hilux Single Cab Hi Rider, BPR 021 GP (#’s could be inaccurate) – Remote control blocking incident near the plastic shop near Builders Warehouse.

Should anyone see these vehicles phone the detail through to Douglasdale SAPS and your local security company.

General Comments:

1) Break in/thefts out of unsecured premises in complex’s increased sharply in the last week, please raise everyone’s awareness to lock up properly and arm alarms when going out and also close and lock all unsecured doors and windows and arm alarms in stay mode when going to bed.

2) I have personally tested the remote blocking scam on my vehicle and it works on all vehicles so when remote locking vehicles always look for the flashing lights and to make absolutely sure make a habit of checking that the doors are actually locked before walking away from the vehicle.

Kliptown victims of fire uplifted by Ward 115 generosity

Thank you 115 residents people like you make the world a better place.

On Saturday, 21 January, eight families in Kliptown, Soweto, lost all their possessions except a handful of items they managed to gather and the clothes they were wearing when their houses burnt down. Within 10 minutes of the fire igniting, the homes were engulfed in flames. No one was injured.

The DA ward councillor for Ward 17, Michele Valentine, won Kliptown, home of the historic launch of the ANC Freedom Charter in 1955, in the 2011 Local Elections. She arrived at the scene of the fire within minutes, the first person to get there to offer help, after the emergency vehicles.

Having been informed of the disaster at a DA caucus meeting on Tuesday night (24 January), councillor Susan Mottram for Ward 115 (from Fourways to North Riding) put out an appeal to her community to donate food, clothing, blankets, etc to the families, which generated an overwhelming response.

On the day of the fire, Councillor Valentine stayed with the families until evening and managed to arrange for them to be housed in a local creche.

She also used her own money to buy food so that the victims would have something to eat that night, and she visited them everyday for more than a week after the fire, trying to find solutions. She has liaised with local government's Human Development department to get their I.D books replaced.

One of the residents is a distraught 90-year-old grandmother who had lived there all her life. Small and vulnerable children are amongst the homeless.

Valentine said, The Housing department in the Johannesburg municipality does not want to co-operate with me and is excluding me from meetings about this disaster. The municipality is required to inform ward councillors of disasters within their wards and work with them to resolve them, but this is not happening. The Housing department is dragging its feet in providing assistance to the victims of fire.

In contrast, Mottram says, "The generosity of the residents in my ward has been uplifting. Thank you Ward 115!"

The residents gave so much that we filled a super cab Ford and a VW Caddie to capacity. On Saturday, 28 January we delivered at least ten 50 kg bags of mielie meel (from the Daily Bread welfare organisation in Douglasdale), plus many smaller bags of mielie meel and samp, tinned foods, toiletries and men's, women's and children's clothes, from residents and stakeholders (including North Rand Methodist Church) both within and outside Ward 115.

The Douglasdale CPF donated blankets.

One of our Douglasdale residents bought goods from Douglasdale Pick n Pay to the value of R1 000,00. She delivered boxes of toothpaste, soap, face cloths, corned beef and other tinned foods and dry foods. A young mother of three in Bloubosrand gave fresh fruit, tinned food and three bags of girls clothes, as well as toys. One resident included an office chair in her donation

I wanted us to show the community on the other side of town that the community on this side of town cares about them, and I am touched by the response I received; it exceeded my expectations and has given hope to the victims of fire in Kliptown, who donąt know when they will find themselves in homes of their own again.
